BRITISH JUNIOR OPEN – DAY 4
Posted on January 15, 2014
4/1 – 1130
Kevin was looking less motivated at breakfast today. After hearing he had 2 matches, the shoulders sunk. Not a good sign. His match was against a player from Croatia, Viktor Mirosavljevic. His opponent had a strong stroke and generated a lot of power. After a few minutes, Kevin was already 1-4 down and not looking too positive. When he injected himself into the match and gave 100%, he was making inroads and forcing loose balls from Viktor. These moments were few and far between however. Kevin lost 3-0 (6-11, 3-11, 4-11). I think Kevin didn’t believe in it today, and it showed in his play. It’s a shame…but after a pep-talk from the coaches, we’re hoping that his evening match will be something better.
4/1 – 1400
Dries played his best match to date in the BJO. He was up against a player from India, Druv Vasirani. A smaller boy, but with good skills. Dries was more assertive in his shot selection and wasn’t too worried that he would make mistakes. He played the shots as they were necessary. His basic game was also quite good. I was pleased for him as his Dad and sister were here to support. A nice moment for Dries!!! Proficiat! Final score: 11-6, 11-7, 11-7.
4/1 – 1800
Kevin’s last match today was better than his morning effort. Kevin was up against Jack Connor (ENG). He was fighting more and his penetration in the court allowed him to keep the T more. He was standing too far back a lot of there time however, missing many volley opportunities. The 1st two games were close, 1-1 and the 2nd a tiebreak. The 4th was neck and neck and Kevin narrowly missed the chance to take it to a 5th, losing 12-14 (4-11, 10-12, 11-7, 12-14). He listened well and showed real determination tonight. Tomorrow his last match at 1700.
TOMORROW!!! DAY 5! The last day of matchplay. Dries & Kevin play their last matches in BJO 2014!
