Bad luck follows Jan VDHW to Melbourne…
Posted on July 13, 2013
It’s been a difficult week for Jan VDHW and coach in Melbourne. After a couple of days training in chilly Sydney, Jan and Mark flew to Avalon Airport, Melbourne for the Victoria Open PSA Challenger 10. It was on this flight that Mark noticed ‘something’ on Jan’s face. It was a comical moment, but little did they know that it was the beginning of something more sinister, and serious. We checked into the worst Hostel in Melbourne (self-voted), the Oslo Hotel and we thought we were having a bad day….until the sores started to emerge on Jan’s face. It wasn’t his breakfast after all. A little later on they started to appear on his hands and then his feet.
Jan wasn’t able to train effectively that day and we spent 3 hours at The Alfred Hospital that night. They had no idea, even after a thorough examination and taking blood samples. It was on our way home, that Mark was chatting with Christophe Standaert, a Recrean stalwart, that it came to light that Jan had contracted a contagious virus called ‘Hand, Foot & Mouth Disease’….very bad luck.
Today, Saturday we hope to open a positive chapter to Jan’s PSA ‘Tour Downunder’ when he will get back on court to resume training for the Tasmania Open PSA Challenger 5 starting next week.
Jan will play Lance James Beddoes (NZL) on Friday 19th July at 1PM local time (20u00 Belgian Time).
