Jan Van den Herrewegen: PSA UPDATE
Posted on May 25, 2013
Jan Van den Herrewegen has had quite a successful month of May on the PSA World Tour.
Jan has played in two PSA Challenger 10 ($10k) events, one in Jersey (UK) and one in this last week in Kriens, Switzerland.
In the Jersey Squash Classic 2013, Jan travelled together with his coach and ended up losing in the 2nd round of Qualifying to Youssef Abdalla (ENG). This after having beaten a local in the 1st Round. The match was close, 2-3, and Jan had to save 3 match balls in the 4th. Lots to be learned from this match, in which Jan had to deal with a clash of styles.
Onward and upward, 10 days later Jan was off to Switzerland for the Sekisui Open, also a PSA Challenger 10 event. Jan found himself again battling his way through qualifying, and did it in style with two wins, both 3-0, and against players more than 50 places above him on the PSA World Ranking. First, against Shinnosuke Tsukue (JPN – #184) and then against Lukas Burkhart (SUI – #168), who was seeded #1 in the Qualifying event.
Onto the main draw, Jan’s 1st main draw match of a PSA Challenger 10, and he was up against the experienced Australian Steve Finitsis (#80). Jan equipped himself well in the 1st two sets, 9-11, 11-8. A little disappointing for Jan though, the next two sets were quickly over 11-1, 11-3, thus losing 3-1.
Jan has his studies waiting for him back in Belgium now, as he takes care of his exams in June, whilst still trying to train enough to get ready for his Australian Tour, where he'll play in Hong Kong, Melbourne and Hobart.
