Jan Van den Herrewegen today managed, for the first time, to qualify for the main draw of a PSA Challenger 5 Tournament. IMG_1629The tournament, held at the Squash Club De Geneve, Geneva (Switzerland) is a Challenger 5 Tournament on the PSA World Tour.

Jan VDHW & Xavier

Yesterday, Jan played his 1st match in the qualifying draw against a Spanish player Xavier Blasco Marchal. Even though Jan struggled with nerves at the start, he proved much too strong in general for the spaniard. Jan was a convincing winner 11-5, 11-6, 11-3.

Jan & Patrick Miescher (SUI)

Jan’s 2nd match and Qualifying Final was against the Swiss National Team member Patrick Miescher. The 1st game was tight & Jan nipped it 13-11. It was clear from the outset that Patrick was a great retriever and had a never-say-die attitude. The match was a see-saw affair…13-11, 9-11, 5-11, 11-5, 13-11. The last game in particular was brutal…Jan was down 8-10, saved 2 matchballs and got back to 10-10 on a very close no let decision (coaches’ heart in his mouth at that moment). The tiebreak was a suspenseful affair…not particular well structured rallies, just a case of who could grind for the longest. Another matchball saved at 10-11, saved and then 2 great rallies to close it out at 13-11.

Jan was rewarded for his efforts with a 1st Round match v World#78 Jaymie Haycocks from England, on Friday @ 11u15.

A great win, Jan showed a lot of spirit in this match.
