Dunlop Keep Fit (Wevelgem)….Tournament Highlights.

Posted on March 5, 2013

This last weekend, on Saturday, 19 Recrean Squash Club juniors made the journey to Keep Fit Resort in Wevelgem. Matches started at 0900 and the Vlaamse Squash Federatie had tournament organisation covered.

Kim & Tine Hannes (VSF)

The coach from Recrean Squash Club for the tournament, Mark Burke had his work cut out as there were more or less 2-3 matches in progress at any one time with Recrean Juniors involved.

It was obvious from the start that the players had missed tournament competition. Their enthusiasm was evident as they got busy with their pre-game warmups, which have been a big facet of the last weeks training sessions.

Joris Van Butsel – 2nd Place

Dries Verhaegen

Dries Verhaegen made his comeback to Dunlop competition in the Boys 2 category and had a thrilling match 1st up against Joris Van Butsel, also from Recrean.

After leading 2-0, Joris staged an amazing comeback to win 3-2. Joris ended up finishing 2nd in Boys 2, after losing in the final, congrats Joris! Other Recrean players in Boys 2 included Florian Bierkens (5th place), Yoran Tanghe (3rd place).

There were also good performances in Boys 3 from Kevin De Maesschalck (Winner!), Karel Reynaert (2nd) & Jonas Verstichel (5th). In Boys 4, Louis Roodhooft was not good enough for the title, but was a valiant 2nd place.

Luca Lodens

Luca Lodens was playing one of his 1st Dunlop tournaments and in his 1st match against Yannick Mahieu (Bronze Medal BK Junioren -11) was struck right in the ear with the ball. After recovering from the shock (and pain!), Luca went on to nearly take the match, eventually losing 3-2. Great effort Luca!

The Recrean girls unfortunately were not large in number, but they made up for that by both ending up on the podium in Girls 2. Fien Reynaert was the winner and Marie-Amelie Callebaut finished in 3rd place. Well done girls!
